New Liverpool Cruise Terminal Gets The Go-Ahead!

New Liverpool Cruise Terminal Gets The Go-Ahead!

The city of Liverpool is looking to host a new generation of super-size cruise liners – and it looks like it will be able to with the news that outline planning permission for a new £50m cruise terminal on the River Mersey has been approved this week!

What will the new facilities include?

The new terminal would include a passport control area, a lounge, café, toilets, taxi rank and vehicle pick up point. But there’s additional plans for the surrounding area to the terminal too – a further £32 million would be set aside to upgrade the nearby A565 as well as a new £20 million link road to the waterfront.

The news comes after Liverpool City Council won permission to dismantle redundant buildings surrounding the site, allowing the build of the proposed terminal.

A major step forward

Head of city assets, Angie Redhead, told Travel Weekly: “This is a major step forward for the multi-million pound project which is one of the city’s most important regeneration schemes.

“We’ve seen the benefits of the existing cruise terminal, which brings in around £8 million each year to the local economy. This figure will increase significantly when we have the ability to welcome the next generation of super liners all year round.

“This has the potential to create thousands of new jobs, will see thousands more visitors heading to the city, and we look forward to working with the team of experts to bring to life these exciting and transformational plans.”

Liverpool was the former home of Cunard

A detailed plan for the terminal is due to be submitted later this year – we can’t wait to see what it’ll look like!

Although the port of Southampton is undoubtedly the busiest port in the UK, Liverpool seems to be a popular choice for both passengers and cruise lines too – more than 60 ships carrying about 120,000 passengers and crew used the existing terminal at Princes Parade in 2017, the council announced.
