Heat things up in the hot springs
Who said you need to go to Iceland for a dip in hot springs? Santorini’s can be found on the tiny uninhabited islet of Palia Kameni, which was formed when the biggest volcanic eruption of ancient times occurred and blew the island to pieces. It left behind this little slice of hot heaven bubbling into the shallow coves, where the temperature of the water can reach up to 35 degrees. It also contains sulfur, thought to be a healing tool for the skin – so if you’ve worked up some blisters off that hike, then this is the place to be! Most boat tours here also stop off at neighboring Nea Kameni for treks up to the island’s crater – so be prepared to enjoy even more panoramic views.
The natural wonder of Red Beach
If you’re a budding photographer, we have just the place for you to set your lens. Red Beach is simply one of the most scenic and interesting beaches on the island – and it’s certainly a rare sight, with steep red hills and contrasting clear blue waters, you’ll be left mesmerised. It’s the perfect place to escape – simply lay back on a sunlounger and soak up your unusually picturesque surroundings. The wind won’t find you either – the beach is naturally surrounded by steep cliffs, meaning it’s quite the sun trap. It’s also located close to the important archaeological site of Akrotiri, so make sure to stop there before or afterwards to admire the excavation.
Step back in time in Ancient Thira
This antique city is like looking into a time capsule of ancient Greek beauty. It’s an archaeological treasure and the home to ruins from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. Stroll down Ancient Thira’s main street where you’ll pass Roman baths and old mosaic houses. It’s a cultural feast and a chance to discover some ancient Greek history. And of course, no matter where you are in Santorini, you’re always spoiled with spectacular scenery – in this case, amazing views lie over the site of the Terrace of the Festivals, where ceremonies were once held in honor of the Greek god Apollo.
