When you look at some of the ships hitting the high seas these days, you can often wonder why anyone would bother to get off in port – it could take a week to try out all the onboard facilities! If you want the right mix of activity and relaxation, it’s key to pick the right ship – and the right itinerary.
Activities and entertainment tend to ramp up on days at sea because everyone is onboard the ship. You might notice more trivia, contests in the casino, afternoon shows in the theatre, musical entertainment, poolside activities and even special classes not offered on other days of your cruise. There’s no chance of you getting bored – even in the middle of the ocean!
If you’re quite partial to the odd sea day just to go at your own pace and get the most out of your ship, then you’re in luck – we’ve come up with just a few ways you could choose to spend your time onboard. Take a look at just some of the things you can do at sea on a few of our favourite ships at the moment!
Marella Cruises – Marella Explorer
Marella Explorer is really stepping up to the plate as the newest addition to the Marella Cruises fleet, with more facilities than any of their other ships. That includes 10 restaurants and 10 bars, as well as an indoor cinema and a Sport & Family Deck. Not forgetting fleet favourites like the Snack Shack and Kora La, plus brand new spaces like Indigo – a swanky bar, club and casino.
Morning – Oceans Spa
The spa doesn’t scrimp on size. In fact, it’s the biggest in the whole fleet. It packs in relaxation rooms, made-for-two suites, and treatment cabins with whirlpool baths. There’s also an adults-only sauna with big, floor-to-ceiling windows and a steam room – making it the perfect place to spend a morning at sea! You’ll feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the day ahead.
Afternoon – Mini Golf
Perfect for all ages, mini-golf is always a cruise favourite. Practice your putt right on the top deck overlooking the ocean, and hopefully win the bragging rights by the time dinner comes around on the evening!
Evening – The Broadway Show Lounge
With a capacity of 1,000 people, this show lounge is big enough to rival a Broadway theatre. And that’s not all it’s got going for it. There are brand-new shows on offer, plus waiter service, so you can get your next drink without missing a thing. Just make sure you get there before the show starts!
Royal Caribbean® – Independence of the Seas®
An entire day to enjoy the vast array of things to do onboard a Royal Caribbean ship is a seriously fun experience. Plus, Independence of the Seas has recently had a whopping £100 million pounds spent on her – to make your days at sea are even better than ever!
Morning – Escape Room
Sometimes when you’re on holiday it’s all about taking a step back from normal life and winding down. But when you’ve had enough of snoozing on your sunlounger, the Escape Room is the perfect place to put your brain to the test! Work as a team to complete a set of clues and puzzles to try and make it out on time. Think you can do it? Go on, we dare you!
Afternoon – FlowRider
Perhaps no onboard activity is as synonymous with Royal Caribbean as the surf simulator, known as the FlowRider. The FlowRider sends water at a very high speed across a small area, mimicking what it’s really like to surf on the ocean. You can ride the FlowRider as many times you want – you’ll come away a pro-surfer in no time!
Evening – Casino Royale
Fancy yourself as a bit of a James Bond? Think you can out-think the house? Take a chance at this very impressive Vegas-style venue onboard, where Blackjack, Roulette and Texas Hold’em are just a few of the exciting games on offer. Who knows how much you might end up winning – will Lady Luck be on your side?
P&O Cruises – Britannia
Combining the excitement of cruising with the sophistication of a five-star hotel, Britannia isn’t just the biggest ship ever built exclusively for the British market – she’s the most glamorous too. There’s never a dull moment onboard Britannia – you’ll find this ship is a destination in its own right, with plenty of daily activities to keep you busy at sea – from bars to pools, sports and shops – you name it, they have it!
Morning – Sports Arena
Start the day right with an upbeat and active game of your favourite sport with family and friends, or take part in friendly tournaments, arranged by the entertainment crew. The tiered viewing decks are great for cheering on your other half, and also ideal for parents who want to keep an eye on the children whilst topping up their tan. There are also screens either side of the bar for playing the latest motion-sensing video games. It’s a fun-filled morning, that’s for sure!
Afternoon – Dance Classes
If you’re wanting a bit of exercise more on your terms, or perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn how to tango – then a mid-afternoon dance class in the perfect way to make your day at sea both playful and productive. A variety of complimentary dance lessons are available, with the main type of dance offered being ballroom and Latin. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience – so get yourself there!
Evening – The Limelight Club
The surroundings here are sumptuous, and you can expect a lively and enjoyable evening in the company of some great performers that you won’t see anywhere else on the ship – and all while you enjoy the delights of the modern European menu. Later in the evening, The Limelight Club turns into a late-night dancing venue, so you can enjoy a full evening’s dining and entertainment without having to move around the ship. The dress code matches the laid-back atmosphere – it’s smart casual every night, even on a black tie evening – a great choice for those seeking a less formal evening.
