How to Stay Healthy in the Sun

How to Stay Healthy in the Sun

Summer’s very nearly here and no doubt you’re counting the days to that long-awaited break! You want to relax, have fun – and, above all, stay well. Prevention is better than cure, and a bit of forward planning and a few basic precautions can reduce the risk of your wonderful holiday being spoilt by sunburn or worse. Here are our top tips to help you and your family enjoy a healthy, happy summer!

Protect your skin

Don’t leave it too late! Apply plenty of sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun, not just from the moment you get outside. Make sure to reapply every two hours, or especially after a swim. Your sunscreen should have the letters ‘UVA’ in a circle logo and offer at least four-star UVA protection. A sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 will help protect against UVB rays, too. If you have pale skin or you’ve burnt in the past, make sure to take extra care with a high factor.

Look great, feel great

We all love hitting the shops pre-holiday to invest in our new summer wardrobe. It’s not all about looking great though – no one wants their hard-earned break spoiled by sunburn or heatstroke! Buy a couple of items that will help keep you covered when you want some respite from the sun. And invest in a hat and some sunglasses, too!

Stay hydrated

This may sound like common sense, but it’s easy to forget that you should be drinking more water whilst in hotter climates. Especially if you’re out exploring your destination – it’s easy to become dehydrated through perspiration. So drink up and stay refreshed – even more so if you’re indulging in alcohol, coffee, and salty foods. Make sure you stay well stocked up on the clear stuff!

Eat well

It’s super important to drink plenty in the sun, but make sure you get in a hearty meal, as well. You’ll only enhance your summer complexion and sense of vitality if you eat a variety of healthy foods! Sometimes it feels like the heat actually shrinks your appetite – but don’t skip lunch altogether. Opt for a fresh salad or something light – go for a rainbow of natural colours on your plate! That way you can look forward to your evening meal – and maybe a glass of wine to go with it!

Time it right

The sun’s heat is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm – try to seek shade or stay indoors during these times. If you’re out and about, make sure to wear plenty of sun protection and drink plenty of fluids! It’s a great idea to carry a little bag or rucksack with your essentials in – that way, you’ll never be caught out.
