Game-changing Technology – Coming Soon to Princess Cruises

Carnival Corporation have recently announced that they are launching a revolutionary personal concierge technology onboard Princess Cruises later this year. It comes in the form of the Ocean Medallion™ – a wearable piece of tech that allows guests to do everything from book shore excursions to order their favourite tipple.

The news was announced at CES 2017 – the world’s largest consumer technology trade show in Las Vegas – by Carnival Corporation CEO, Arnold Donald. “Its simplicity is what makes it so special,” said Donald, noting that there’s no need to charge it or even really learn how to use it. “It places the guest at the centre of thinking.” Arnold also added that there will still be the traditional key card option should a guest prefer it, but he’s confident that most guests will go for the medallion experience.

Simple, but effective…

“The Ocean Medallion creates an elevated level of service that’s made possible by technology, but doesn’t feel like technology,” said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer for Carnival Corporation. “Whether guests are exploring new experience options, having a drink delivered to their seat at the night’s show, or trying their luck gaming while lounging poolside, we will assist our guests wherever they are, while engaging with them in a uniquely personal way. Our mission is to help our guests make the most of every moment of their vacation.”

How does it work?

The tiny disc was designed to worn as a fashion accessory – so can be worn on the wrist like a smart watch, around the neck like a pendant, or simply carried around in your pocket. Your evening wear attire just got a new addition! And you won’t have to worry about charging it or using any fiddly interfaces, as it has no ‘on-off’ switch and no menu to navigate.

But that’s not all the Ocean Medallion can do – it can be used as a credit card for onboard purchases, as a key card to access your stateroom, and even locate family and friends around the ship.

The concept is similar to Royal Caribbean’s WoW bands, which uses the same contactless technology. However the Ocean Medallions are said to be more intuitive, due to the use of their wearers’ personal preferences – you can create your own event itineraries and receive onboard notifications, so you won’t miss out on any of the action.

Your personal cruise planner

The Ocean Medallion works in conjunction with Ocean Compass – the digital concierge that’s available before, during and after your cruise. You can access it through touchscreens throughout the ship, on your smart phone, and even on the TV in your stateroom. Order drinks, book excursions, plan your evening’s entertainment – it’s all in your hands.

The Ocean Medallion is sent to each guest free of charge prior to their cruise, so they can fill in online profiles with their lifestyle choices, hobbies and recreational and entertainment preferences. The idea behind being the better Princess Cruises get to know you before you set sail, the more enjoyable your cruise will be.

When will it will be available?

Ocean Medallion Class will be available from 13th November 2017 onboard Regal Princess, with plans already in motion for it to be rolled out across the whole Princess fleet.
